One of the most renowned figures in American history, Sojourner Truth was an abolitionist and activist who fought for racial equality, women’s rights, and other causes during the turbulent nineteenth century. In 1863, Truth was invited to give a speech in Angola, Indiana, but was met with opposition. Although she was traveling with Union guards, Truth was advised to arm herself for her protection.
