Free Lesson Plan: A Raisin in the Sun “I Am” Poetry
In 1959, Lorraine Hansberry made history when her play, A Raisin in the Sun, made its Broadway debut. The first Broadway play written by a Black woman, A Raisin in the Sun owes much of its success to Hansberry’s realistic and moving depiction of the Younger family and their struggles.
This free printable lesson plan combines creative writing with character analysis to help students connect with the play’s strong cast. After selecting a character, students will write an “I Am” poem for that character by identifying their qualities, motivations, feelings, and actions in the text. By the end of the activity, students should have a better understanding of each character and their role in the play.
