Cormac McCarthy is one of America’s greatest novelists, often compared to Faulkner, and winner of the Pulitzer Prize. In All the Pretty Horses, he reveals the dark side of the typical coming-of-age story through the story of a young rancher and his companions who travel to Mexico to find their fortunes. The protagonists, being young themselves, are excellent vehicles to convey complex themes—fate vs. free will, man vs. nature, etc.—to your students. The lyrical prose is frequently difficult to follow, however, as McCarthy forgoes traditional punctuation and attribution, so this really is a book for your more proficient classes.
