I've heard this novel called "the first book that really held my attention" time and time again. Tears of a Tiger opens with a news clipping: a high school basketball star has just been killed in a drunk-driving accident. The story that follows, told entirely through conversations, notes, journal entries, and homework assignments, deals with grief, the difficulty of communicating, basketball, family, guilt, prejudice, and, surprisingly, Macbeth. The way it's written and the subject matter will grab reluctant readers in 9th grade and up.
